• ESL for Domestic Help

Jan and Katya
Jan is often called to teach English to domestic help because of her ability to speak Spanish. This has proved invaluable for communication between homeowners and their Hispanic housekeepers, groundskeepers, or whomever they need to instruct and understand.

Jan's tutoring extends to reading comprehension and writing as well, as often the homeowner needs to leave written instructions when they will not be present, and the workers might need to leave notes for the homeowners.

Because of her knowledge of Spanish grammar, Jan is uniquely qualified to explain the many differences between the two languages, for instance in such areas as word order, double negatives, and why direct translations from Spanish to English often don't work.

• Language Coaching for Musicians

In her work with musicians, in addition to basic language skills, Jan's musical education and active singing career enable her to prepare her students for stage performances, interviews, and other media-related events around the world using correct English music terminology. For example, Jan helped an Italian rock singer prepare for a worldwide tour during which he would be interviewed extensively in English by a variety of media.

• Business English

One of Jan's specialties is tutoring in American Business English and Etiquette, which can differ markedly from customs in other countries. For instance, Americans expect people to speak clearly and in a straightforward manner; to them if you don’t “tell it like it is,” you waste time, and time is money. Americans will use the telephone to conduct business that would require a face-to-face meeting in most other countries; they often do not insist upon seeing or getting to know the people with whom they do business.

Many of Jan's students come from foreign countries for
short visits and benefit from lessons from a native
American English speaker while they're here.

for instance in such areas as word order, double negatives, and why direct translations from Spanish to English often don't work.
